To give a discount only to customers with a certain tag on Shopify, build a customer segment from that tag and limit a discount to that segment. Tagged customers who are logged in get the price; everyone else doesn't. This guide walks through the free native method, its limits, and how to make it automatic, with different percentages per group and an expiry date.
The short answer
- Tag the customers (for example
vip,proormember). - In Customers > Segments, create a segment:
customer_tags CONTAINS 'vip'. - In Discounts, create a discount and set Customer eligibility to that segment.
- Ask those customers to log in at checkout (or share the code with them).
- Test with a tagged test account.
Why tag-based discounts are useful
Tags are the simplest way to group customers on Shopify. Common uses:
- Trade or pro members: stylists, designers, contractors.
- Wholesale buyers on a simple percentage.
- VIP or loyalty tiers: "Gold 15%", "Silver 10%".
- Staff, ambassadors or partners.
- Groups: teachers, students, healthcare workers, members of a club or association.
Because the discount is tied to the customer, not to a public code, it can't end up on coupon sites.
Method 1: Native Shopify (segment + discount), step by step
Step 1: Add the tag
Open a customer in Customers, find Tags, type vip and save. For many customers, select them in the customer list and use Add tags, or import a customer CSV with a Tags column.
Step 2: Create a segment from the tag
Go to Customers > Segments > Create segment and enter customer_tags CONTAINS 'vip'. Save it as "VIP customers". The segment updates as tags are added or removed.
Step 3: Create the discount
Go to Discounts > Create discount and choose Amount off products or Amount off order. Under Customer eligibility, choose Specific customer segments and pick "VIP customers". Set the percentage, minimum purchase and dates.
Note: depending on the discount type and method, customer eligibility may only be available on discount codes, not automatic discounts. If so, create a code limited to the segment; even if the code leaks, it only works for tagged customers.
Step 4: Test
Log in as a tagged test customer, add products to the cart, and check that the discount applies. Then try as a guest and confirm it doesn't.
Limits of the native method
- One discount = one percentage. "Gold 15%, Silver 10%" means separate segments and discounts.
- No personal rates. A single partner with 40% needs their own discount.
- No expiry per customer. Tags stay until someone removes them.
- No intake. Shopify doesn't decide who gets the tag; you do, by hand.
- Combinations. Check the Combinations settings so a tag discount doesn't stack with sales you didn't plan for.
Method 2: Automate tagging with Shopify Flow
Shopify Flow (free on most plans) can add tags automatically, for example tag customers after their total spend passes $1,000, or remove a tag after a date stored in a metafield. Flow is powerful but you build and maintain each workflow yourself.
Method 3: Use a member discount app
If your tags really represent memberships, people who apply, get approved and should lose access later, an app saves the manual work. Lilya: Pro Program & Discounts handles the full cycle:
- Applications: customers apply on a storefront form with proof uploads. Invite codes and allowed email domains approve instantly.
- Groups instead of loose tags: approve people into member groups, each with its own percentage.
- Three discount levels: program-wide, per group, or a personal percentage for one member.
- Automatic at checkout for logged-in members, with an optional minimum order and an allowance per period.
- Expiry and renewals: memberships end after a set number of months, at season end, or never, with a grace period and reminder emails.
- CSV import for members you already have, and Shopify Flow support.
Honest limits: it gives percentage discounts, not fixed per-product prices, and checkout rules work online, not in POS. Free for up to 10 active members, $19/month for unlimited.

Setting it up
- Install Lilya: Pro Program & Discounts.
- Create groups, for example "Gold 15%" and "Silver 10%".
- Import existing tagged customers from a CSV into the right groups.
- Choose a membership length (for example 12 months) and turn on renewal reminders.
- Add the application form if new people can join.
- Place a test order as a member.

Native vs app: which one?
Need | Native segment + discount | Member discount app |
|---|---|---|
One group, one percentage | Great | Works |
Several groups with different % | Several discounts | Built in |
Personal rate for one customer | Separate discount | Built in |
Application form with proof | No | Yes |
Expiry and renewal | Manual or Flow | Built in |
Cost | Free | Free up to 10 members |

Tips
- Name tags clearly (
pro-2026,vip-gold) so you know what each one means a year from now. - Watch stacking with sitewide sales. If you're planning Black Friday, see how to schedule and revert sale prices.
- Use member discounts instead of permanent price cuts. If you need to change prices for everyone, use bulk price changes you can revert.
FAQ
Can Shopify apply a discount automatically based on customer tag?
Yes, by limiting a discount to a customer segment built from the tag. Some discount types only allow segment eligibility on codes, and apps using Shopify Functions can apply it automatically.
Does the customer need to be logged in?
Yes. Shopify needs to know who the customer is, so they must be signed in to their customer account at checkout.
Can I give different discounts to different tags?
Yes. Create one segment and one discount per tag, or use an app with member groups.
Can a tag-based discount expire for each customer?
Not natively. Remove the tag by hand or with Shopify Flow, or use an app with membership expiry.
Will the tag discount work in Shopify POS?
Native discounts may work in POS depending on the type. Lilya: Pro Program & Discounts applies its checkout rules online only.
Bottom line
For one group and one percentage, Shopify's segments and discounts are free and enough. When you have several groups, personal rates, applications or yearly renewals, Lilya: Pro Program & Discounts runs it for you.
